6th Grade News February 4 - 8, 2019

General News
Binder Check Dress Down
On Monday, February 4, 2019, students with 300+ points on their binder check sheets will be allowed to dress down. Please make sure you are in compliance with the HMS/CCSD dress code policy (no leggings, jeggings, or jogging pants and no rips/holes/tears in jeans). 

Saturday School
Saturday School began yesterday, February 2nd, 2019. This is an excellent opportunity for ALL students to prepare for the Georgia Milestones by working with their teachers in a relaxed, small-group setting. Saturday School will operate on a rotating schedule so that students get to see multiple teachers and review multiple subjects each time. Transportation is also provided. IT IS NOT TOO LATE FOR YOU TO GET YOUR STUDENT SIGNED UP! If you would like your child to attend or would like more information, have them get an application from from their teacher, or contact either the front office or Ms. Ward 
(wardt@clarke.k12.ga.us).

Scoliosis Screening
Scoliosis screening letters went home in January and are due by this Friday, February 8th with a parent and doctor signature. Nurse Chambers has received several letters that only have a parent signature and not a doctor's. Below is a video for families to view on how the process will go at school on February 26th and 27th.

Panther Prowl

Black History Month Program
The Hilsman Black History Month presentation will take place on Thursday, February 21st from 6:00-7:00pm. Any students interested in performing, participating, or assisting with the presentation, please see Mr. Blake or Ms. Page!

Content News
Math
In preparation for the upcoming Georgia Milestones Assessment; sixth grade students will be given a weekly big 20 in Mathematics which will be due each Friday. This will count as a homework assignment. The expectation is for every student to be proficient (80% or higher).

The 6th grade math department also use Friday's as a Milestones prep day. Sample questions are provided and students are provided with ample think time before responding. Students are encouraged to practice their speed and math facts at home. 

Please assist your child and encourage him or her to complete and submit the assignment on time.

If there are any questions feel free to contact your child's Math teacher. Students will be covering volume this week Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Students will take their Unit 5 Test on Thursday and have Milestones preparations on Friday.

ELA
Please make sure students are reading for their reading logs. This is their homework every night. We will finish our novel, The Hatchet, this week. We will also be reviewing test taking strategies and we will review previous material to prepare for the Milestones.

Science
Students will continue learning about subsurface topography, ocean motions, and water conservation. Unit 4 will wrap up next week and the Unit 4 Test will be on February 15th.

  • Tutoring on Tuesdays from 4:00-5:00pm with Ms. Rohrbach

Social Studies

Spanish
Students will begin Unit 2--Spanish Speaking Countries this week.

Advanced Spanish
Students will complete Unit 6--Articles and review during the week.
  • Unit 6 Test on Friday, February 8.
  • Tutoring with Ms. Willingham on Mondays and Tuesdays from 4:00pm - 5:30 pm.

Ag Science
Test Correction Forms due Wednesday with parent/guardian signature.
Monday- Test/Quiz Makeup 7:45-8:15 and 4:00-5:00

FFA:
Tuesday- 
Agriscience and Nursery Landscape Practice 7:15-8:00
Leadership Team Retreat 3:20- Rook and Pawn 6:30.   

Thursday- Agriscience and Nursery Landscape Practice 7:15-8:00 and 4:00-5:00

FFA Carnation Sale Feb 4- Feb 8. Flowers must be purchased by 4:00pm on Friday.
Carnations will be $2 for 1 flower or $5 for 3 flowers- a card will be available to fill out the students name, 7th period teacher and a short note.
They will be carnations and can be purchased from Mrs. Martin in room 804 by the media center.
Parents wishing to purchase flowers can send the money and a paper with student name, 7th period teacher and a short note to Mrs. Martin or drop it by the office.
