General News:

No School Monday:
Don't forget there is no school for students on Monday. Enjoy the long weekend and see everyone on Tuesday! 

HilsMART
Hilsman Middle School PTO would like to invite you to participate in our first ever HilsMART, a yard sale, vendor and talent show extravaganza! on SATURDAY, FEB 29 from 10am-2pm in the Hilsman cafeteria and halls.

 SIGN UP to rent a table ($15 pre-pay or $20 day of event- register by Feb. 21) Bring YOUR stuff (yard sale items, crafts, art etc.) and sell them and KEEP ALL THE PROCEEDS. Your trash is another's treasure! Clean out or share your wares while supporting the mission of the Hilsman PTO - to enhance school spirit, support teachers and staff, and raise funds for student-focused initiatives like our new student leadership council.

Everyone in the community is welcome to rent a table (8ft) or come shop. We will have food vendors and entertainment.  Set up begins at 8 am- doors open at 10. Students who attend will receive a coupon for a dress-down day! We also welcome business sponsors. Questions? Email

ELA News:
ELA is working on the Black History Paper and continuing our Milestone Practice/Study.
Dr. Marty and Mrs. Rucker's 4th Period Class received make-up work packets. 

Math News:
Math will be continuing to learn about measures of center. 

Science News:
Science is wrapping up unit 4 and preparing for the test.

Social Studies News:
Social Studies is reviewing and preparing for Unit 5 Test. The test is broken into two parts, both will be taken this week (Wednesday and Friday). Study guides are available in Google Classroom, and students will receive paper copies. Study Guides will be now be due on Friday, 2/21.

Family and Consumer Science News:
6th Grade FCS classes will continue to evaluate the different components of a healthy lifestyle; we will be reviewing food and kitchen safety procedures, and will begin to explore the factors involved in eating a balanced diet. Students will be viewing Osmosis Jones beginning on Tuesday, so please be sure to sign and return the video permission form if you have not already done so. Safety quizzes from Friday will be returned on Tuesday; students who got more than two questions wrong will need to review and retake the quiz before they will be able to participate in food labs. Please let me know if you have any questions about this policy.

6th Grade News: February 9-14, 2020


General News:

Spring Break Food Drive
The Hilsman Food Pantry will be holding a food drive during the month of February to provide food for students and families in our community during Spring Break. We are asking specifically for dried or canned goods that can be used as breakfast or lunch items. The homeroom with the most donations will be rewarded with a dress down day!

Science is continuing with Unit 4, moving into the Water Cycle and continuing with Water Conservation. 

Social Studies News:
Social Studies is continuing working on our Latin American Economics Essays. Essays will be due Tuesday 2/11. We will then transition into learning about Voluntary Trade.

Art News:
This week, 6th Graders will be learning about artist Kehinde Wiley and making portraits inspired by his works. Students will chose a pose based off an "old master" painting and have their picture taken. They will use stencils to create bright, beautiful backgrounds for their photographs and make paper frames. Finally, we will hang the portraits in the hall to be exhibited. This project places a high prominence on craftsmanship and curation. 

Family and Consumer Science News:
6th Grade is beginning our second unit this week. We will be learning about food and kitchen safety, nutrition, and healthy habits. Last week, students received a permission form to view Osmosis Jones during this unit; these forms must be signed and returned by Thursday to Mrs. Seymour. Friday's Unit 1 Test have been graded and entered into infinite campus. Students wishing to do retakes or test corrections to bring up their score must do so before Friday, 2/21. 

STEM News
Students will learn about fuel sources for automobiles and design design a vehicle made from recycled materials.

6th Grade News: February 3-7, 2020



General News:

Q3 Progress Reports:
Progress Reports for Quarter 3 are being sent home with students this week. These provide the 4.5 week notice of how your child is progressing in their for this quarter. If you have questions or concerns about your child's grades, please reach out to your child's teacher(s) - a full 6th grade faculty list can be found at the bottom of the blog. 

Read with Malcolm Reading Rally!:
Malcolm Mitchell, author of The Magician's Hat, founder of the Read with Malcolm Literacy Program, partner of the Share the Magic Foundation, and former football player for UGA and the New England Patriots, will be at Hilsman on Wednesday, February 5th to speak with and motivate our students. We will also have other esteemed guests in attendance! Let's Rally! 


Credit Recovery:
Credit Recovery is an after school program designed to help students who failed one or more classes from Quarter 2. Students who attend Credit Recovery and complete the work may have their failing grade(s) changed to passing ones in order to avoid summer school or the risk of being retained. Credit Recovery meets on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays (and some Thursdays!). The program started last week and will continue through March. Social Studies will be continuing learning about Latin America's Economic Systems and Voluntary Trade.
