6th Grade News: September 23-27, 2019

General News
College & Career T-Shirt Day - Monday 9/23
Our first monthly College/Career T-Shirt day will be this Monday, September 23rd. Students are encouraged to wear a t-shirt representing a college (or career) with uniform bottoms. No stamps or signatures in student agendas are required to participate. Please make sure the college is visible on the shirt, as solid colors are not permitted. Students who do not wish to participate must wear regular uniforms. Our Panther staff will be decked out with shirts from our colleges and we hope students will join us! 

Hilfest
The first Hilfest at our new building will be on Saturday, October 5th from 10:00am-1:00pm! More info is forthcoming, but mark your calendars and stay tuned!

Hilsman Healthcare Center
The doctor is in at Hilsman and Gaines! The Hilsman Healthcare Center, located behind the gym, will have its grand opening on October 8th. All students and staff at Gaines Elementary will soon have easy access to sick visits, well visits, immunizations, dental services, counseling services, and more. For more information, check out this article written by one of our very own Hilsman alumni!

Fall Picture Day
Fall Picture Day at Hilsman will be October 11th. Flyers will be coming home soon with more information!

Girls Soccer Opportunity
This fall, Athens United will be holding practices for all players interested in playing soccer. The practices will be held at Whit Davis Elementary. The focus of the training sessions will be enhancing athletes' technical and tactical skills. Fall practice is open to all players enrolled in Clarke County Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. We hope players attend as many practices as possible. The cost for the entire season is $50 for elementary, and $100 for middle and high schoolers. This is an excellent opportunity to receive some great coaching and practice, especially for girls not already playing organized soccer. Math News:
In Math, students are starting Unit 2! Monday - Thursday students will be working on rates, ratios, and equivalent fractions. Friday there will be a Unit 1 Vocabulary Test and a Make Up Work Day. 

ELA News:
In ELA students will be writing a paper telling Freak the Mighty from Freak's perspective. Students will also be working on annotating.

Science News:

Social Studies News:
Social Studies students will be reviewing and taking their Unit 1 Test this week. Study Guides will be due the day of the test, with three signatures from a teacher or parent to earn full credit. Later this week students will begin Unit 2, covering the different forms of governments found in
 Europe. 

Connections News
Art:
Next week, 6th graders will finish their pop art drawings and start a unit on surreal art. They will make a surrealisteye that tells a symbolic secret! We’ll use Renee Magritte’s “The False Mirror” (below) as inspiration.

Band
Permission slips for students who are interested in switching to percussion were sent home Thursday.  Please sign and return the permission slip by Tuesday in order for them to audition on Friday.  If you have any questions, please email me campl@clarke.k12.ga.us

Spanish:
Students will continue our work with unit 1 A, discussing what we do and do not like to do, focusing on review of infinitives, vocabulary, negatives, and expressing agreement and disagreement. There will be a unit 1 B exam on Wednesday.

6th Grade News: September 16-20, 2019

General News
Q1 Progress Reports
Progress Reports for Quarter 1 went home on Wednesday this past week. If you have not signed and returned the progress report envelope, please do so as soon as possible, as we are planning to use the same envelopes all year to help track progress. These progress reports provide the 4.5 week notice of how your child is progressing in their classes for this quarter. If you have questions or concerns about your child's grades, please reach out to your child's teacher(s) - a full 6th grade faculty contact list is provided at the bottom of this blog. Please check Parent Portal frequently so that we can address any academic concerns early!
No School for Students Friday, September 20th
Don't forget that there is no school for students this Friday, September 20th as it is a teacher workday. Enjoy the long weekend, everyone!

In ELA students will be reading Freak The Mighty all week and focusing on Theme and Central Idea!
Science News:
In science we will continue our study of the inside of the Earth focusing on plate tectonics. Students will also be given a study guide for their first unit test coming up in a few weeks. 

Social Studies News:
In Social Studies, students will be learning about European culture and the different languages spoken there. They will also be learning about the major religions practiced in Europe, including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. 
Social Studies students will also be taking their first major test this Thursday, September 19. All students will receive a study guide in class on Monday to use throughout the week to prepare for class. 

Connections News

Art:
Next week, 6th graders will finish their 3D graffiti names and then start on the next project of making posters with statements of empathy. :)
Spanish:

6th Grade General News
Q1 Progress Reports

21st Century After School Program
21st Century Classes began on Tuesday, September 3rd. A parent or guardian must attend an Orientation prior to the student attending classes. Students must complete an application and enroll in order to attend classes. Students can be picked up by parents or ride one of the 21st Century buses. 21st Century applications are in the office or with Mrs. Dalton (daltonm@clarke.k12.ga.us) and Ms. Hughes (hughesa@clarke.k12.ga.us).

ELA: 
Students will be writing about a conflict that they have experienced and will continue reading Freak the Mighty. 

Math
Students will be computing decimals. Accelerated Math students will have a Quiz Friday, 9/13

Science
Students will be learning about the layers of the Earth, including crust, mantle, and inner and outer core. 

Social Studies
Students will be studying environmental issues in Europe, including air pollution, acid rain in Germany and the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster in Ukraine. Students should expect a quiz Friday.

Agriscience
6th grade will be talking about plant science and will have a Phototropism Lab by the end of the week

Art
6th graders will be finishing up their zentangle portraits and start a new project: 3D graffiti names.

Band
The band rock-a-thon will not take place on September 13 as stated in the syllabus due to construction in the gymnasium.  It will take place in late November or early December depending on the Cedar Shoals football schedule.
