6th Grade News: September 21st-25th

GENERAL NEWS: 

Students will be taking iReady Assessment This Week!

Students will be taking the iReady test Monday-Thursday in Science and Social Studies (first 30 minutes of class). Please remind students to try their best, take the test with no assistance, and keep their cameras on. The information we get from the tests will not be used for a grade but to better understand where they are at currently! Be on the lookout for more information! 

 

How Can I Stay Updated?

  1. Check your email. Hilsman will use Campus Messenger to email parents/guardians all school-wide announcements. Follow these directions to sign up: 

  2. Sign up for the Hilsman PTO page for more frequent updates. Search Facebook for "Hilsman Middle School PTO, Athens GA"

  3. Check Google Classroom for class announcements.

Google Classroom

This will be your child's "home base!" All materials and assignments will be posted to Google Classroom, which is our school-wide platform. Assignments, instructions, calendars, emails, and Zoom links will be posted in each student's Google Classroom account. Students must check Google Classroom every day!

 

How Can I Support My Student?

You are the most important person in helping your student succeed, and we want you to partner with us so we can help students be as successful as possible.

  • Help your student establish a routine that includes a consistent bedtime and wake-up time.

  • Help them establish a consistent place to work during class with a table/desk.

  • Help your student find a consistent place for school materials so they always know where their materials are. Help them organize their materials and/or papers for each class.

  • Headphones will be very helpful if there is more than one student attending class from home.

Fridays are Student Support Days - No Class

Classes will not meet on Fridays. Teachers will still be available at their usual Zoom links for additional support and tutoring, and teachers will also be assigning work for students to complete on their own. For specific times for when teachers are available, please see below:




 

Hilsman Syllabus Signature Form

Each content in each grade across Hilsman is using a Google Form for both students and parents/guardians to fill out indicating that they have the syllabus for each of their classes. Your child's syllabus in each class should be posted on Google Classroom for you to view. When you and your child have had a chance to read through them, please go to bit.ly/hmsform2 in order to "sign" all of the syllabi!

Welcome to the Hil! 6th Grade News: September 8th-11th, 2020

General News: 

First Week of School!

We are so excited to finally meet each other and be together, even if it is only online for now. Our focus this week will just be on getting to know each other, learning how to use different features in Zoom, making sure students and families have the materials they need, and going over class procedures and expectations. We know that virtual school is a huge change for everyone, and we want to make sure that students feel comfortable before diving right into academic content!

 

How Can I Stay Updated?

Content News

Math
Math will be doing get to know you activities and practicing different tools we will be using this year. 

ELA
6th ELA is doing a personal artifact that includes an object from home that they will share with their class. It will give peers an idea of who they are. Focusing also on the basics of getting around the virtual classroom (google sites, zoom, etc.). We will begin talking about Narrative writing as we are getting to know each other! 

Science
Science will be going over virtual norms, and working on practicing a classroom setting, and getting to know students. 

Social Studies
Monday: Labor Day! No School!
